“You made me do that.”

In Cruising, Al Pacino plays a New York policeman, Steve Burns, who
infiltrates the gay S&M scene in order to catch a serial killer who has been
preying on gay men. As he begins to spend more and more time in this sleazy
underworld, his relationship with his girlfriend begins to suffer, and even
his own identity starts to be affected. Meanwhile, the killer is still on
the loose. Burns sets himself up as bait, but will his trap be successful?

The film raised furious protests when it was released - Gay Rights groups
claimed the film’s depiction of gay men was offensive, and conservative
groups claimed the film’s depiction of gay and sado-masochistic sexuality
was offensive. Yet Friedkin’s film is more subtle than this: all the
characters inhabit a moral wasteland in which nobody is entirely evil or
good. Aside from its complex morality, Cruising is also a masterful thriller
in its own right, building up incredible suspense to reach its climax, and
leaving us with a final shocking twist.
